A Day in the Life of a Kindergartener

Our Kindergarten is collaborative, developmentally appropriate, and built on the tenets of teaching to the whole child. Our Kindergarten day is from 9:00am to 2:30, Monday-Friday.

As teachers, we provide a caring atmosphere that gives students the freedom to experiment and explore. Through our day we engage them, laugh with them, listen to their stories and allow space for the unique facets of each child to blossom.

We believe that the acquisition of knowledge is active and that children learn best when engaged experientially, working in concert with their peers and conducting independent research.

Our environment is enriched by playful inquiry and social and emotional support, thus the children in our kindergarten grow to be inquisitive, reflective and critical thinkers. We believe that student driven and teacher guided subject matter comes alive, as our curriculum makes meaning through deep exploration. Children walk away from our program with a strong sense of self and community.

Our day also includes: Snack & Read Alouds, Outdoor Play, Math, and Nature Walks. Classroom investigations are integral to our program, and are included in our science curriculum. Our Program includes enrichment work in music & movement, art, health education, cooking, and long-term student lead projects.

  • In Kindergarten, we take walking trips to our neighborhood library. We check out books for our classroom and discover a love of reading from our beloved librarian Jane!

  • During our science investigations, we get to race cars and build catapults! Our Kindergarten science curriculum is a blend of student lead interests and state science standards.

  • Our lunch times together help us build strategies for sharing conversations, talking about healthy eating habits and celebrating the joys of our day.

  • Story Workshop is a structure we use in Kindergarten to develop authentic stories through play, collaboration, and the arts. These stories are continually transformed to the written word.

  • Reading Workshop is a time when we read books together, listen to stories and visit the library. We make our own books and often dig deeper into author studies of our favorite writers.

“If you are a dreamer, come in. If you are a dreamer, a wisher, a liar, a hoper, a prayer, a magic-bean-buyer. If you’re a pretender, come sit by my fire, for we have some flax-golden tales to spin. Come in! Come in!” -Shel Silverstein
