Executive Director March 2016

Dear Families,

Can you believe all the trees that are in bloom in our neighborhood? I think we are safely over the hump of winter. It’s so fun to see the crocus and daffodils blooming and buds forming on plants and trees! Signs of spring everywhere!

This month’s newsletter is chock full of information. Please read all the way through…

The application process for scholarships for 2016/167 is open. Awards up to a maximum of 50% tuition, not to exceed $2,500, will be made to qualifying applicants to cover the costs of your class. The deadline for applying for financial assistance/scholarships is April 30th. Childswork partners with TADS (a Financial Aid Assessment organization) to help us administer our financial aid program. TADS provides financial aid worksheets, application forms, assistance filling out forms and ultimately recommendations to Childswork so that we can use our financial aid dollars objectively, fairly and effectively. To apply for financial aid, please start by going to www.tads.com. Please see our website for more information about this process. Scholarship decisions will be made by the end of May/early June. In addition, Childswork partners with DHS in their Employment Related Daycare Program. If you are a working family with low income, you may be eligible for this additional benefit. Please see Kim if you would like further information.

This is the time of year when we start our recruitment for new Board members. We are looking for people who are committed, enthusiastic and willing to lend a hand to our school! Board commitments are a minimum of two years. The current Board meets on the second Tuesday of every month (subject to change based on the needs of the Board). If you are interested in serving on our Board, please send Kim (kim@childswork.org) or Smitha Chadaga (Board President/srchadaga@hotmail.com) a letter describing your background and interest as well as a resume by April 15th. We will vote on the new Board members at our May 3th meeting and new members will begin at our June 7th meeting. Feel free to contact me or any Board member if you have questions.

We are starting work on an exciting new playground project! We will be depaving the small playground on the east side of the school and transforming it into a natural playspace. Part of our Annual Fund this year is being used to get us started on this exciting project. Keep your eye out for the design and more information on our bulletin board outside the main office. And save the date for June 11 when we will have our community depaving day!

The Night at the Gallery committee is working hard getting ready for a fun adult community event for you from 5-7 on Saturday, April 9. The feedback we have received from families is that there is a desire to have an adults-only community event. Since we did not hold our auction this year, the Night at the Gallery is our attempt to fulfill this request. This will be a free event. Classes are working hard on their art projects, Whole Foods Market is going to provide appetizers, there will be wine, beer and non-alchoholic beverages and live music by Seffarine, a musical duo that includes our own beloved teacher Lamiae Naki. The sale of art at the event will help us to cover the costs associated with the night. Any excess funds collected will go directly to the natural playspace project. We hope you can join us!

Also, keep your eye out for summer camp information coming in early April!

See you in the hallways!
