News & Updates
Our 2019-20 Annual Fund Drive has launched!

It's time for the most critical fundraiser of the year at Childswork: the Annual Fund!

Donate now!

As a non-profit, Childswork depends on the generosity of families to help meet its budget every year, and to provide essential financial support to the school’s programs and mission. While tuition provides the bulk of the funds needed to operate the school, it doesn’t provide 100%. This year, we need to raise an additional $35,000, approximately $175 per family.

Your much-needed gift will help cover costs that keep our school operating and our kids thriving—from paying for our amazing faculty and staff, funding engaging curriculum, to maintaining the magical outdoor learning spaces, and providing financial aid to students who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford our wonderful programming.

In addition to the typical costs of running the school, this year we have the added challenge of working with the city of Portland on permitting and a possible parking lot restructure. If the city requires that the school create a full-fledged parking lot, we will have to give up nearly two thirds of the outdoor learning space. Our hope is that by petitioning the city, we will be able to keep our valuable outdoor learning spaces intact. To get the best help we can through this process, the school hired a land use attorney, which is adding extra operating costs to this year’s budget. While the Annual Fund will not use all the money on the legal and permitting fees, having your extra financial support will help with these efforts to hopefully save our outdoor learning space from being turned into a parking lot.

The Annual Fund runs until December 20, 2019, and we hope that the Childswork community will participate at whatever level feels comfortable. If you or a business you know would like to participate at a higher level, there are sponsorships available.

Thank you for being a valuable member of the Childswork community, and for joining us in celebrating and supporting this wonderful institution!

Creative Reuse Center
Creative Reuse Center

Dear Families,

In an attempt to reduce our carbon footprint and provide our children with enhanced creative opportunities, Childswork Learning Center is promoting our Creative Reuse Center, located in our art studio.

Our re-designed studio is located on the lower level east side of the school. The studio is utilized by teachers and small groups of children daily.

The Creative Reuse Center houses items that would otherwise end up in the landfill. Our goal is to reclaim items and offer an eclectic array of reused materials for children to create projects.

The concept of the Creative Reuse Center originated in Reggio Emilia, Italy. Known as Remida, educators and families in Reggio Emilia connect with manufacturers and businesses to collect recycled materials. Each year, the schools unite and provide an assortment of beautiful materials in the town square. Families gather to create projects, then the materials are saved and utilized again for future projects.

The Creative Reuse Center at Childswork is inspired by the Reggio curriculum. Our children are encouraged to create original pieces without using glue, tape, or staples. A photograph is taken of the child’s work, then the materials are stored for future use.

Families may help by donating the following items:

  • Clean egg and berry cartons
  • Bottle caps
  • Caps from squeeze applesauce and yogurt
  • Acorns
  • Beads
  • Buttons
  • Corks
  • Curtain Rings
  • Stones
  • Feathers
  • Golf Tees
  • Key rings
  • Keys
  • Small pieces of netting
  • Nuts and bolts
  • CDs and cases
  • Pegs
  • Toilet paper and paper towel tubes
  • We are looking for items that would otherwise be sent to a landfill as opposed to purchased items.

Susan Johnson is the Childswork Studio Coordinator. If you have questions, feel free to contact her at susan@childswork.org.

Welcome Letter from Julie Lee, our new Executive Director

Dear Childswork Families,

I am privileged and thrilled to have the opportunity to follow in Kim Hill’s footsteps and serve as your new Executive Director. The first time I visited the school I immediately knew that it was a special place and I wanted to become a part of the Childswork learning community.

As a career early childhood educator and program administrator, I passionately believe in the importance of providing high-quality ECE programs for all children regardless of socioeconomic standing, race, religion, ethnicity, gender, or family life-style. I consider it my privilege and honor to support the amazing teachers and staff at Childswork so that they are able to provide your children with excellence in early childhood education.

My goal is to collaborate closely with the school faculty and administration to carry on the mission and philosophy as intended by the school founder and the Board of Directors, to “…provide supportive, nurturing, and encouraging environments for children and their families to discover new relationships, to discover new ideas, to construct knowledge through play, and to cultivate a joy for learning.”

I’d like to take a moment to share my first impressions and the reasons I accepted this position. Childswork has several qualities that make the school exceptional:

  • Each child is known and valued. Students step on campus and are immediately greeted by name. Each child is understood as an individual with unique strengths, talents, and interests.
  • A highly educated, dedicated, creative, and nurturing faculty, administrative team, and staff.
  • Exceptional stimulating and engaging indoor and outdoor learning environments.
  • A joyful community. Students experience the joy of learning and families are offered the opportunity to become partners in their children’s education.

I am looking forward to meeting every family personally. Please join us on Tuesday, April 10th or Wednesday, April 11th in the Family Lounge for coffee and conversation at 8:30AM. If you are unable to attend the morning meeting, I would like to invite you to set up an appointment with me personally so that we can become acquainted. Feel free to email me at Julie@childswork.org

I am looking forward to a long and successful relationship with the Childswork community. You have an extraordinary group of children and I am eager to get to know each and every one.

Warmly,

Julie Lee
